Uniform laboratory platform guarantees efficient quality assurance

Located in Hellenthal in the Eifel region of Germany, Schoeller Werk GmbH & Co. KG is one of the leading manufacturers of stainless steel welded pipes. To enable it to cater even more efficiently for the rising demand for testing, the company has, with the assistance of Zwick, brought its testing laboratory up to a uniformly modern level New acquisitions plus a complete modernization have been complemented by a software update on three existing testing machines.
The company' employs over 1,000 people and produces more than 80 million meters of stainless steel pipes annually for use in such diverse areas as household technology, medical engineering and automotive applications. Increased production volume and rising customer requirements are constantly placing new demands on the company's production-line quality assurance. The mechanical properties of a defined number of specimens from each production batch are tested in the laboratory. As part of this process the tensile properties of the sections of pipe are checked in a testing machine. The machines are equipped with hydraulic grips to ensure secure clamping of the pipe specimens.

At Schoeller Werk the test results are stored centrally in a database; data exchange via the testXpert II testing software is fully automatic. To ensure identical synchronization of all data, three testing machines had their software updated to the latest version (testXpert II V3.6). A full modernization was carried out on another testing machine to ensure continued service reliability and future-upgradability. Measurement and control electronics, drive technology and testing software are an integral part of such modernizations. testControl II sets new standards with its very high control and positioning accuracy over the entire speed and force ranges. Existing accessories such as specimen grips can continue in use following modernization of the testing machine.
